The Benefits of Minimally Invasive Knee Procedures: Exploring Genicular Artery Embolisation

Genicular artery embolisation, or GAE, is a minimally invasive knee procedure, used to help treat mild to moderate knee pain, typically associated with osteoarthritis. As it is a non-surgical treatment, it carries low risks with many benefits. For someone who does not want surgery or wants to delay surgery as long as possible, it can be a suitable option, depending on your situation.

Top Benefits of Genicular Artery Embolisation

Minimal, minor risks.

Genicular artery embolisation is considered a low-risk procedure. Multiple studies have seen less than 1% risk of side effects, with those occurring being minor, such as skin discolouration. However, like any procedure, it’s important to keep in mind there is some level of risk. Following GAE, you may experience bruising around the incision site, infection, an allergic reaction to the contrast dye, incomplete pain relief, vascular complications or mild post-embolisation symptoms, like fatigue, nausea or fatigue. There is also a small risk the embolic agents — the small particles injected during the treatment — may travel and block other arteries, damaging tissue.

Pain relief for up to 12 to 24 months.

Depending on your condition, you may experience long-lasting results from GAE, potentially up to 12 to 24 months. Pain reduction can be significant, with a high success rate. Several studies have shown the success rate of GAE is up to or above 99%, meaning there’s few people who do not experience some level of pain relief. Keep in mind, this is a minimally invasive knee procedure, however, it is not intended to repair damaged cartilage and other treatment may be required for severe damage.

Results in as little as 3 days to 2 weeks.

You can start to experience pain relief from genicular artery embolisation quite quickly. Studies on the effectiveness of GAE have suggested results have been seen in some patients in as little as 3 days, but can be up to 2 weeks. This helps you find relief quite quickly after treatment.

Only 2 to 3 days of downtime.

Recovery time following GAE treatments is very short. The minimally invasive nature of this knee procedure means you can return home the same day and most of our patients return to work within 2 to 3 days. Returning your normal routine, including exercise, should be slow and steady, helping you to keep potential risks to a minimum.

Treatment can be repeated.

If needed, you may be able to have multiple GAE treatments in your lifetime. Many people utilise their decreased pain and increased mobility from GAE treatment to help them seek lifestyle changes to support their osteoarthritis pain management, such as weight loss or physical therapies. However, you may be able to have repeat GAE treatments if this is an option you and your doctor believe is right for you.
